💭 Why you'll love this recipe
No doubt that s'mores are a classic summer treat, but now you can easily make them indoors with an air fryer.
- No need for a campfire or even an open flame when you have an air fryer! This means you can enjoy all the classic flavors of a s'more without dealing with smoke and ashes, or worry about finding sticks and starting up a fire. Now there's a safer and more convenient way to do this indoors (i.e., less chance of accidentally setting something on fire, which is always a bonus)
- Quick and easy recipe. You'll be able to whip up air fryer s'mores in no time — just set it and forget it and you'll have these tasty treats ready in 5 minutes!
- Perfectly toasted marshmallows each time. With an air fryer, you don't have to worry about burning marshmallows or having them turn out too gooey - they come out perfectly golden brown every single time! Consistency!
📋 Ingredients and notes
You need just three ingredients for this air fryer s'mores recipe: Graham crackers, marshmallows, and tiny pieces of chocolate!
Notes
- Choice of chocolate. I've tried this recipe with several types and brands of chocolate, and I'll admit - the simple Hershey bars have consistently worked the best. Trader Joe's also has a giant bar of chocolate that works great. Reese's peanut butter cups also work great if you want a unique flavor.
- Substitute for Graham crackers. If you don't have graham crackers on hand, you can substitute a wide variety of other options such as cookies, waffles, or any other type of cracker. Pecan sandies work surprisingly well in this recipe!
Vegan / Vegetarian Marshmallows
Okay, let's talk about the elephant in the room - how to find vegan or vegetarian friendly marshmallows. So, most marshmallows are not vegan or vegetarian because they contain gelatin (which is usually animal derived). Marshmallow fluff tends to have egg whites, which some vegetarians might consume, but vegan don't. Sugar, a key component of marshmallows, can also be processed with animal char (versus organically) - in which case, it won't be vegan either.
Many marshmallow brands available in the grocery stores do use gelatin and hence, won't work for a vegetarian or vegan version of this recipe. This includes Kraft, Lucky Charms, Jet Puffed, Marshmallow Peeps, and Marshmallow Fluff. On the other hand, Dandies and Trader Joe's produce vegan marshmallows (and are my favorites to use in s'mores recipes!)

Air Fryer S'mores Variations
- Caramel apple s’mores: Use caramel chunks and sliced apples in place of chocolate.
- Peanut butter s’mores: Use peanut butter cups instead of chocolate. Reese's peanut butter cups work so well in this recipe.
- Nutella s’mores: Substitute hazelnut spread for the chocolate chips (or add Nutella along with chocolate chips, no one is judging!)
- Salted pretzel s’mores: Swap out the Graham crackers for pretzels, and sprinkle with sea salt before serving.
- White chocolate raspberry s’mores: Use white chocolate chips or wafers, and top with fresh raspberries for a delicious twist on a classic favorite!
📖 How to make air fryer s'mores
Prepare the basket of the air fryer with parchment paper. Break up the graham crackers into halves.
First, cut the marshmallows in half. Place the graham cracker halves in the air fryer basket, place 2 marshmallows over each cracker, and cook for 5 minutes or until the marshmallows look golden brown.
Then place the chocolate over the marshmallows and press a bit to warm the chocolate. One idea here is to use a combination of different types of chocolate within the same s'more - for instance, I love using milk chocolate and dark chocolate together for some delicious chocolatey goodness.
Using the remaining Graham cracker halves, place another layer of crackers over the chocolate. Put the s'mores back in the air fryer basket and cook for just 1 minute.
You should have delicious, golden brown marshmallows, fully melted chocolate bars, and a crisp and delicious Graham cracker sandwich to boot. Enjoy your indoor s'mores!
👩🏽🍳Top tips for making the best air fryer s'mores!
I know this is one of the easiest recipes on my blog, but following these tips will make sure that your air fryer s'mores are perfect.
- Choose your chocolate wisely. Chocolate is an important ingredient here, so you'll want a high quality, meltable chocolate. Wafers and chunks typically work best. Milk chocolate is the classic choice, but if you want something richer and creamier, dark chocolate might be a better option. You can also mix and match different types of chocolate for variation in flavor and texture!
- Assemble the s'more carefully. Don't overcrowd the s'more to avoid a melty mess in your air fryer. I like using regular sized marshmallows and smaller chocolate pieces so they melt well.
- Keep an eye on the cooking time. Air fryer s'mores cook quickly, so keep an eye on the cooking time to avoid burning them. Cook them for 3-5 minutes, or until the marshmallow is golden brown.
- Put your own spin on it. Don't be afraid to get creative when it comes to making air fryer s'mores! Try adding different toppings like nuts or dried fruit for more flavor or even drizzle some caramel sauce overtop for an extra special treat. Just make sure not to overload the cracker, or it might cause a mess in the basket!
👩🏽🍳 Troubleshooting FAQs
Yes, you'll need to cut your marshmallows in half if you want to enjoy a tasty batch of air fryer s'mores. This is because the air fryer will cook your s'mores quickly, and the marshmallows tend to cook faster than the other ingredients due to high sugar content. If you don't cut them in half, you run the risk of burning or overcooking them!
Cookies are a great swap for graham crackers and come in a variety of flavors. But if you want to go all out, waffles, thin slices of French bread, warm pancakes are all good options.
The answer is both yes and no! While there are definitely benefits to wrapping s'mores in aluminum foil or parchment paper before placing them on the basket, it's not necessary. Doing this helps protect the s'mores from direct heat and keeps things neat and tidy so that when you're ready to eat, everything comes off cleanly, that's the main benefit!
Most "traditional" marshmallows do not contain dairy but they often contain gelatin, so they're not vegan or vegetarian friendly. I like using Trader Joe’s vegan marshmallows to make my s'mores!
🍴 Serving and storage suggestions
First off, I've never had a s'more that was uneaten after say, 15 minutes of being made in my household. So, if you have some left, kudos to your restraint. I do suggest that you eat them promptly (within six hours at room temperature.). Storing s'mores in the refrigerator or freezer will compromise their freshness and taste, so I don't recommend doing this.
