Crispy garlic bread you can make in 15 minutes!
Garlic bread used to be a special treat—saved for pasta nights or family gatherings. But sometimes, all you have is a bag of sliced bread and a craving for something garlicky, buttery, and crispy right now.
That’s how this version came to be. A little butter, plenty of garlic, and a quick toast in the oven later—I had the crispiest, most flavorful garlic bread that disappeared before dinner even hit the table.
No fancy ingredients, no fuss—just ridiculously good garlic bread made with what you already have.
📋 Ingredients and notes
To make homemade garlic bread, all you need are a few simple ingredients: sliced white bread, butter, garlic, garlic powder, and fresh parsley.

Shruthi’s Top Tip
Use softened butter—not melted. Softened butter spreads evenly, preventing soggy spots. Melted butter can make the bread greasy.
- Fresh garlic + garlic powder = the best of both worlds. Garlic powder infuses into the butter, while fresh garlic gives bold, aromatic flavor.
- Flip halfway for extra crisp. Turning the slices ensures an even golden crunch on both sides.
- Make it ahead. The garlic butter mixture keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days, so you can have garlic bread on demand.
- Use a wire rack for max crispiness. If you have one, place the bread on a rack instead of a baking sheet to let air circulate underneath.
Variations & Substitutions
- Substitute white bread with Italian, French, sourdough, or whole wheat bread for a different texture.
- Want cheesier garlic bread? Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, or even a little sharp cheddar before baking.
- For deep garlic flavor, infuse the butter. Let the minced garlic sit in the softened butter for 10 minutes before spreading—it intensifies the taste.
- Get creative with flavors. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for heat, or mix in a little ranch seasoning for a fun twist.
📖 How to make garlic bread using sliced bread
Step 1:
Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a small bowl, mix butter, garlic powder, fresh garlic, and parsley until well mixed.

Step 2:
Arrange bread slices on the baking sheet and generously spread the garlic butter mixture over each slice.

Step 3:
Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until golden and crispy around the edges. For extra crispiness, flip the slices halfway through baking. For an extra crispy, golden brown top, broil on high for the last 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.

Step 4:
Let the garlic bread cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to keep it crisp.

🍴 How to serve garlic toast
Garlic bread is best enjoyed straight from the oven while it’s warm and crisp! I love serving it with my favorite pasta dishes like sun-dried tomato pasta or creamy mushroom pasta, or using it to soak up every last bit of my tomato soup.

🍴Storage and reheating suggestions
Wrap the garlic bread in foil or place it in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 2 days. Avoid refrigerating, as it can dry out the bread.

Garlic Bread with Sliced Bread
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened, equal to 1 stick
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, adjust to taste
- 8 slices white bread
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, mix butter, garlic powder, fresh garlic, and salt until well combined.
- Arrange bread slices on baking sheet. Spread garlic butter generously over each slice.
- Bake 7-9 minutes until golden and crispy around the edges.
- Garnish with fresh parsley. Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to keep bread crisp.
Notes
- Softened butter is key—cold butter won’t spread evenly and tears the bread
- For extra crispiness, butter both sides of each slice before baking
- Don’t skip the wire rack—cooling on the pan traps steam and makes bread soggy
- Variations:
- Substitute white bread with Italian, French, sourdough, or whole wheat
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or Parmesan over slices before baking. You can also broil on high for 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
- Add ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes for heat
- Mix in 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan to the butter

This is my go-to side anytime we have spaghetti. It’s super simple and my husband and I love it. Definitely better than store bought Texas toast. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing – glad you enjoy it
I didn’t use white bread as I only had honey wheat. I feel like this garlic bread is decent for not using a loaf or thick slicked bread. I doubled the garlic and added a bit of cheese, the flavor was really mild. I’d definitely increase and garlic even more next time and add some salt since my butter was unsalted. Also, it did take about double the time in the oven. It was very soggy at 7 minutes and my bread was thin (natures own).
Very tasty
